Review: Gilmore Girls Revival – A Year In The Life

Ok, ok, ok.

Let’s do this. (Mind you, I’m writing this only now because of reasons, so I might forget a few things. That’s why I’ll stick to the main topics.)

tumblr_inline_o3w7vp2mja1s1m2v2_500

Pretty much everyone was waiting for this moment to arrive: the day we’d finally get the final episodes of Gilmore Girls and find some closure.

But, boy, were we set up for disappointment.

Seriously, I don’t even know where to start!

No, actually I do: Rory.

Girl, what have you done to yourself? Is this the same person we loved to have as a role model when we were teenagers?

I’ve had to disagree with her choices many times in the past (saying no to Logan’s proposal, temporarily leaving Yale, the entire S4 arc…) but this ia a whole new level of “taking bad decisions”.

giphyrory

I get it. Life is hard. REAL life is even harder: the economy sucks, people who don’t even deserve to serve ice cream – not that there’s anything wrong with it, just sayin’. Think of Paul Rudd in Ant-Man – are at the top of the most desirable professional fields, and plastic dolls get the best guys.

But really, Rory? Really?

Does that make it ok to act like a jerk, looking down to fine jobs and sleeping around a la Brooke Logan (yes, I’m talking about The Bold and the Beautiful, sue me)?

I know that’s not exactly where she pictured herself to be at in her 30s, but that’s how things are, and she should have taken note and fought back.

But no, let’s throw a pity party and be the other woman. Who cares, right?

For someone who had always pursued honesty and loyalty in her relationships (again, S4 not counting), she sure has gone way out of character.

And don’t let me start on the “Best pick” speech, cause it’s really pointless after the (in)famous last four words.

But let’s do it anyway

First of all, had she chosen Logan, there is no guarantee she wouldn’t have done it for the baby, at this point.

Even though I’m convinced that’s who she should have ended up with, because let’s face it, who was the guy she kept inadvertently calling in moments of distress? Who was the guy who lifted up her spirits when she most needed it? Who was the guy she chose when presented with other oppurtunities in the past? And I could go on for hours, but the point is: once something like a pregnancy happens, it’s easy to lose focus of the real reasons you should choose a guy over another, especially if one of them is the father (I’m just assuming that’s the case).

rory-jess-logan-gilmore-girls-6515

And yes, I love Jess, almost as much as Logan, and I wouldn’t have minded if she had picked him instead. Well, maybe a bit… But hey, at least IT WAS A CHOICE. At least she would have finally realized how lucky she had been to have these amazing boys in her life. Regardless of what you think of them or the team you’re on, you have to admit that this girl had it all at one point, and she let go of pretty much everything.

gilmore-girls-atx-reunion-jared-padalecki-38540109-1024-680

Yep, Rory’s an idiot.

#SorryNotSorry

BTW, I’ve seen more realistic portrayals of the journalism world in Smallville & Co., and they were flying out of the window one minute, and using X-Ray vision on the crime scenes the next one.

_1472662867

Now that we’ve said what’s on everyone’s mind, let’s change subject.

Lorelai.

Was it just me, or she was just a tiny bit (extremely) annoying in this one?

I get the father-daughter complicated relationship and the consequences that Richard’s death would ensue; I get the Wild thing; I get that sometimes you need a change in perspective in order to realize that you’re quite happy the way you are… But was it really necessary to make it seem like she was going through some humongous crisis? Cause she’s been through a lot of things in the past, and reacted way better.

I don’t know, I would have loved to see more of the quirky Lorelai we were used to in the first seasons, especially since Rory’s development went already down the not-happy-life-in-shambles way.

tumblr_n8dszf7che1qcmptjo3_250

The Finale.

That wasn’t closure. I don’t care if producers go on and on about open endings because life is that way and blah, blah, blah. You’re doing a revival, and you’re doing it because the last season of your show didn’t get the job done. So, do it now.

We were left with almost the same amount of questions (if not more) than last time, so where’s the difference?

Yeah, I don’t care if it seems shallow, all I wanted from this 4 episodes was closure, and all I got is an uncontrollable need for fanfictions.

en-akademisk-kvart-fanfiction-english-language-learning-2-638

Now, on to the things I liked (which are not many, and there’s not too much to say about, so I’ll just make a list):

  • The Life And Death Brigade. – Best part of the revival.
  • Logan, Jess and Dean. Because, duh.
  • Paris. – Her and Emily’s was the only character growth I’ve seen in these four episodes. Also, loved Berta and her family.
  • Kirk’s movie. And Petal. And Oober.
  • Some of the cameos (there were too many, but a few were very well thought. Others – the majority – not that much)
  • The Homecoming idea at Chilton, though I hated Rory’s reaction to the principal’s job offer.
  • The setting and the festivals. Loved ’em.
  • The thirty-something gang. That was eerily funny.

79b7fe50-9719-0134-ce6c-0aec1efe63a9

As far as the other storylines go, I could have enjoyed the musical, but they made it unbearably long. Seriously, that time could have been used to further develop someone’s story (Jess’, or Christopher’s… They were given terrible screen time, especially the latter).

The one where Luke’s sister accidentally joined a cult was nicely done, but April didn’t have such luck. Hers, like others, was a bit rushed.

All in all, I think the only episode that was actually necessary to the story  was the last one, while the others were more an attempt to cure our nostalgia than anything. There was basically no actual development in the time span that went from S7 last episode and the first one of the revival (aside from what we’ve already talked about), so  it could have been structured differently – though I loved the idea of the seasons.

It didn’t satisfy me, but it also got me in the mood for a long due rewatch of the series.

So at least that was achieved.

I’m not happy to say these things; like every fan of the show, I wanted to love the the revival so badly, I’ve probably deluded myself with too high expectations.

But I still think they could have done waaaaay better than this.

Fantastic Beasts Review

Yo, people!

Not dead, see?

sher

Great accomplishment, I know.

So, now that we have established my being alive and all, let’s get to business.

Who’s seen Fantastic Beasts?

Raises hand

rai

I did, and guess what: I loved it.

It’s odd, cause I thought I wouldn’t, and that I’d miss the Golden Trio and the original story so much that I wouldn’t enjoy this one.

You know, growing up with it, it’s not easy to let go of a world you’ve lived in for many years, and then go back after a while and find that everything has changed.

But I have to admit, it wasn’t bad at all.

With the recent disappointment of The Cursed Child, maybe we needed a breath of fresh air. Maybe we needed to go back, before going forward.

But let’s see what we have here: Newt, our “new Harry” (so to speak), is a total cinnamon roll.

I was afraid they’d cast Eddie more because of his recent success than him being fit for the role, but he is. Yep. And I’ve loved his characterization.

newt

Jacob and Queenie were fun too, adding a lighter feeling to the story.

What I didn’t exactly love was Tina. I don’t know if it’s the actress or the role itself, but I didn’t find it impactful enough for a female counterpart, not the way Hermione/Emma was. Of course, I’m not saying she had to be like her, but I felt something was missing, something that a character like Hermione had instead.

Anyway, the overall atmosphere of the movie was great, the roaring twenties’ NY was as enchanting as London (#sorrynotsorry, you know I have unconditional love for the States) and Grindelwald’s reign of terror was eerie af.

I’m not gonna spoil anything here, don’t worry, but I am gonna say that I’ve very much appreciated Colin’s rendition of the Evil Guy, and I’m looking forward to seeing the follow-up of that last plot twist.

Ezra was also a solid choice, though I would have liked to see more of him. Well… Ok, no, that would be spoiler, so I’ll just shut up.

genie_zipper-gifc200

Moving on to the name characters of the movie, the much anticipated fantastic beasts: I. Want. A. Niffler. And a Thunderbird. And a Bowtruckle. Also, the Demiguise was cute. The others, I didn’t mind’em too much; but those in particular, I. Want. Them.

fb-final-trailer-niffler-slide

So yeah, I liked the movie, and I’m really excited about the sequels.

Though to be honest, I feel like Ilvermorny could give so much as source material for a separate movie. I mean, the stories about its origins on Pottermore were great, why not give it a go?

ilv

But that, my friends, is a topic for another day.

Bear with me guys, it’s a funny/sad story, but it’s a long one, so brace yourselves.

maxresdefault
I’ve always been told not to start a speech with “So”, but since I have literally no strength in me to fight alongside the gods of grammar and proper writing this morning, I’ll do it anyway.
So, exactly one week from now, my friend and I will be heading to London for 7 days of fun, relax aaaand to attend the Captain America: Civil War premiere… Or so we thought.

tumblr_n9nfou5qRq1qf4h86o3_500

See, the two of us are huge Marvel fans (we love entertainment in general, but have a penchant for Cinecomics, Disney and Marvel) and we’ve been planning to attend one of their events for YEARS. And by years I mean that we’ve spent the last few years saving money and trying to figure out where and when we should go in order for that to happen. Trying being the keyword.
See, we live in Italy, our towns are pretty small (mine’s a little bigger, but that does little to the cause) and not extremely well connected to the bigger cities; on top of that, we’re not exactly Tony Stark when it comes to paychecks and financial resources (meaning we have no job and little money to spend in “epic journeys”).

tumblr_mhoxynrMtD1rvufhzo2_250

I graduated from University last year (with honors, if it helps understanding the situation) and so far I’ve only been able to find part-time jobs like baby-sitting or translating a couple of texts for some agencies.

Finding a job here is not a piece of cake (mmmh cake… Great, now I’m hungry) so we have to manage with what we have.

recipe-image-legacy-id--364199_12
Anyway, a few months ago, after finally coming to terms with the fact that there would be no Italian premiere (last year for Avengers: AoU we waited, and waited, and waited… and waited for one, but it never came) we took matters into our own hands – as much as possible, at least – and decided to go big, or go home: we would try our luck with the London premiere (ooooooh!).

giphy2.gif
We started planning everything, making calculations, checking every day flights and hotels’ prices, trying to find the cheapest, though safest way to do this.

January came, and we had to book then if we still wanted to find low prices and availability. So we did.

Civil War debuted in theaters between the 29th and the 4th of May – safe last minute changes- so we had to cover that span of time, plus at least a couple of days before if we wanted to go to the red carpet.

With May 1st in the middle of the week, we still payed as much as we did a couple of years ago when we booked in June for July, but at least we knew we had secured or spot there.

Too bad we couldn’t leave Italy on the 25th of April, because there were no flights that day, at least not with the company we were flying with (the cheapest one) so we had to book our flight for the 26th (in the evening, cause of course they cut the morning flights – and not only those, the company is planning to leave our airport for good, something that was announced after we booked our tickets, obviously – and did I mentioned I also had to pay double the price for our return flight cause the site wasn’t working?).
You’re starting to see our problem?

Apollo-13-Houston-We-Have-a-Problem-Tom-Hanks
The thing is, I’ve always had bad luck: every time I go somewhere outside my hometown, you can be certain that something will happen to me, and usually, that something is nothing positive. And every time I try to plan some activity, taking into account every little thing that could go wrong, you may rest assured that things WILL go wrong, and all I’ve done to counteract that, will be vain.
Now, I’m not saying I’m bad luck for the others… Just for me. My own, personal little raining cloud, always following, never leaving me.

tumblr_lvahb2hno01qe9apmo1_500

And apparently, my friend is not that lucky either.
So of course, after months of speculations (checking every inch of every site that could have had info on the matter) we found out that the premiere would be on the 27th or 28th (If we look back to previous ones, they were usually a couple of days before the release date, even taking into account other European dates) and we started to get excited, because for once, we would finally be able to make it.

c28c79149033b46b7fcd7b279248cf7e
We still had a lot to plan, because 1) If everything went well, we would land in London at midnight, not exactly the best time of the day (well, night) 2) Both me and my friend were going to be on our period for the entire length of our vacation (duh, why thinking we could escape that for once) which meant cramps, cramps, cramps and not only that 3) We didn’t know our bearings, and if we wanted to get a decent spot on the red carpet, we had to go there first thing in the morning 4) We had to consider that it probably would have rained the whole time, and cold weather awaited us – in the last few days in Italy we’ve had a sudden rise in temperatures, so it wasn’t going to be a simple transaction, especially for our suitcases – 5) We still didn’t know how the whole thing worked, and how to go to the toilet while being stuck in the crowd (major problem, major.)

8f93c23a42d39d8bcc6797bf80f9a0f0
We were in the middle of trying to figure out all that when, a couple of weeks ago, it was officially announced the date of the premiere: April 26th.

sm_captain-america
You can imagine our reactions.

giphy3Love-and-Other-Drugsgiphy4
I’ m not going to cry my heart out here, cause I don’t think you guys deserve this punishment, but I’m telling you this: my Facebook profile image is Sad Affleck since the day we found out. So just imagine me instead of him in the Sound of Silence video thing…

*Bye, Chris Evans, I’ll never be able to meet you. I thought that day would come eventually, but clearly, it is not this day… Or next Tuesday… Or any other day, apparently.*

200_s
So, not only we’re arriving in London when the fun has already ended, but I also have a sore throat now (obviously, this had to happen… Again, cause of course just last month the same happened before a concert, and a couple of months ago on my birthday) and who knows what else in store for us.

tumblr_inline_mkrcbv6idR1rh9y0a
So far, we know that every single event we were interested in, it ends or starts before or after our stay (like countless exhibitions, Romeo and Juliet with Richard Madden, or any tv series convention taking place there).
I know we shouldn’t complain so much, since we’re still getting a week in one of the best cities in the world, but you can see how all of this can be immensely frustrating.

giphy5

One thing for sure: I am never, eeeeever planning anything else that ahead of time. Not even my wedding.

tumblr_mnzn9plyNO1r1ruqbo3_500

#StarkLuck

Wait for it

Sooner or later I’m gonna post about the McNamara Situation (a.k.a. On a scale of 1 to Kat, how bad of an actor are you?) but for now, I want to wait.

Episode 6 will be the deciding factor.

What can I say, I’m just that kind.

Shadowhunters – Speed Review

This was meant to be posted yesterday, but things happened, and now here it is.

giphy1

Ok so, Shadowhunters was nice, though too fast-paced… It didn’t give the viewer (and the characters) the time to fully process what’s going on.
I mean, you get the idea, but I bet it mustn’t be easy for the non-readers to follow without getting a bit of a headache (I’ve read the books, as you may have noticed, and even to me it seemed a bit too rushed).

giphy
According to many, the Lightwoods and Magnus seem to be the best part of the show so far, and I have to agree.

But honestly, even though the acting could have been better at times, I liked everyone else too.

tumblr_nvyop73htr1qm9mpuo1_500
I might be biased, since I was a fan of Dominic way before this, but still… I honestly think he IS the perfect Jace.

tumblr_o0vqsfhMxa1sgaqfho2_400
Just give’em a chance, people!
Almost nobody liked Jamie and Lily when the movie came out, and now all I’m reading is how much better they were… Just. Chill.

200
It’s okay to have personal opinions and preferences, but come on! Don’t be mean or know-it-all.
It might not be a masterpiece, and everything is a bit different from the books – as we knew it would be – but I’m really excited to see what’s in store for the rest of the series.

Could it be better? Sure. Could it be worse? Definitely.

But for now, I’d say it’s a worth-watching 40 minutes of television for the fans of the saga.
